A massive dust storm today cloaked Sydney’s landmarks, including Bondi Beach, the Opera House and harbour bridge.

The 300 mile-wide storm swept across New South Wales from Broken Hill, sparking health fears.

It was the result of strong winds which picked up dust from the drought-hit outback, shrouding rural communities and coastal towns in a thick haze.

The New South Wales Health Department urged people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions to stay indoors.

“Some of the dust particles will be very small and can get deep into your lungs and that’s why we’re concerned about people’s health,” said Dr Richard Broome, director of environmental health.

Low pressure also brought an unusual covering of snow to parts of New South Wales.
