This was the shocking moment police caught a lorry driver reading at the wheel while driving on a motorway.

The trucker was seen casually browsing the pages of his book by undercover police officers as they patrolled the M60 in Manchester.

He was one of 71 drivers to be pulled over by police as part of a local crackdown on traffic offences this month. He was given a fixed penalty notice for driving without due care and attention which he has since paid.

Motorists were also stopped for texting at the wheel and aggressive driving, with 66 people being issued with tickets for driving without due care, Greater Manchester Police said.

Officers used an HGV to secretly film the offences as part of Operation Tramline.

Detective Inspector Susan Redfern said the investigation had been a "big success".

She said: “We have had some good results over the course of Op Tramline and I hope that those people who have been issued with penalties take their punishments to heart and stop committing offences that are endangering the lives of other drivers.

“There’s been quite a range of reasons that we’ve stopped people for but I think probably the most unbelievable one was stopping one particular driver for reading a book at the wheel!”
