Voters 'want immigration level cut'

12 April 2012

A cut in immigration is the top priority of both Conservative and Labour voters, with more than half the electorate wanting a future Government to reduce numbers of incomers, according to a poll.

The survey for the Daily Telegraph found that 52% wanted a future Tory administration to reduce immigration. Some 62% of Conservative supporters wanted it cut, along with 42% of Labour backers.

The YouGov poll gave David Cameron's party a comfortable lead, with 41% (down two points compared to a similar survey last month) against Labour's 31% (down one). Liberal Democrats polled 15% (down one).

The poll was taken in the wake of a wave of strike action calling for "British jobs for British workers" in protest at the employment of foreign nationals at a refinery in Lincolnshire.

After immigration, the second priority named by people taking part in the poll was the reduction of the European Union's powers, followed in third place by more help for families.

There was further bad news for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, as the poll found that only 14% of respondents believed the Government's measures to tackle the recession were working.

Mr Brown was named as the best person to be Prime Minister by just 25% of those questioned (down two points), compared to Mr Cameron's 33% (down two).

Some 65% said they were dissatisfied with Mr Brown's performance as PM (up two points since last month), while 25% were satisfied (down two). The Tories were most trusted to deal with the recession by 35%, against 28% for Labour.

And 48% of those questioned said that Kenneth Clarke - brought back onto the Tory frontbenches last month by Mr Cameron - would make the best Business Secretary, against 17% for Labour's Lord Mandelson.
