Parts of the UK are set to be battered by strong winds and heavy rain as weather warnings come into force on Saturday afternoon.

The Met Office has put weather warnings in place for parts of the south of England including Cornwall, Plymouth, Devon, Somerset, Isles of Sicily, Torbay and North Somerset.

Forecasters said gusts of up to 65mph are expected along with heavy showers and possible hail. The weather warnings come into force at 4pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday.

The Met Office has warned of delays on road, rail, air and ferry transport and possible power cuts.

The weather will be clearer and less blustery in the north, allowing frost and ice to form overnight. On Sunday, showery rain will hit southern England early on but will eventually clear to make way for sunny periods.

Scattered showers and possible snow will fall in the north and the west.

Temperatures will peak at around 13C in the south on Saturday and 8C in the north but the wind-chill factor will make it feel cooler. It will be around 12C in the south on Sunday and 5C in the north.

A Met Office spokesman: “Watch out for further blustery showers this afternoon with some hail possible. Even though temperatures are above average the strong winds will make it feel colder.”
