UK tourist dies in hotel pool

12 April 2012

A young British woman has drowned in a hotel swimming pool on a Greek holiday island, the Foreign Office said.

Ann Marie Webster, in her mid-20s, drowned in the pool at the Olympion Village Apartment complex in Kavos, Corfu, officials said.

The victim is believed to have a young daughter and is from the Wigton area of Cumbria.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office added: "Consular officials are in contact with next of kin to provide the necessary assistance."

A source at the complex said she checked in on Tuesday morning with two female friends at the start of her holiday.

Ms Webster is understood to have been on an inflatable in the pool when she went in to the water.

She was dragged out by staff and holidaymakers but they could not save her life.

A local doctor is understood to be carrying out an initial report into the cause of death and Greek police have taken witness statements.

Olympion Village, built three years ago, is a large complex of 66 apartments a few minutes walk from the centre of Kavos - a popular destination for thousands of British holidaymakers each summer.
