Tube shooting 'remains with chief'

Sir Ian Blair says the death of Jean Charles de Menezes remains with him
12 April 2012

London's former police chief has spoken of his "regret" for the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, but dismissed any suggestion of a post-shooting cover-up.

The Brazilian electrician was killed by armed police at Stockwell Underground station in south London in 2005 after being mistaken for a suicide bomber.

Sir Ian Blair described how the death "remains with me" as he spoke during an interview at the Hay Festival of Literature in Mid Wales.

But he went on to insist that, while he was "accountable" for what had happened, he was not "responsible".

In a wide-ranging discussion, the subject of Mr de Menezes's death was raised several times.

The Metropolitan Police force was found guilty of breaching health and safety laws but no individual officer faced charges.

Sir Ian left the force in December 2008, citing differences with London Mayor Boris Johnson.

He was given a life peerage when the Dissolution Honours List was announced last week.

That decision was immediately criticised by the family of Mr de Menezes as a "final slap in the face".

Sir Ian said: "I have always said that I am now and always was accountable for the death of Mr de Menezes. What I have also said was that I was not responsible for it."
