Tory anger over spoof Cameron video

12 April 2012

A Labour MP's impression of David Cameron inviting voters to sleep with his wife was condemned by political opponents and colleagues alike.

Backbencher Sion Simon also mimics the Tory leader offering to give his children away in a spoof video posted on the internet.

The send-up drew a furious response from Tory MPs, who insisted that Mr Simon had "gone too far" and should be "ashamed of himself".

Leader of the Commons Jack Straw also delivered a rebuke to the Birmingham Erdington MP, saying: "We have to ensure that political discourse is at a reasonably high level, and avoid personal attacks."

But Mr Simon defended the video, claiming it was not offensive and raised valid questions about Mr Cameron's lack of policies.

The footage shows Mr Simon speaking directly to the camera in a lounge, calling himself "Dave" and wearing a baseball cap and T-shirt. He says: "Yo. My name's Dave, yeah? Thing is, I'm just like you. I've got the same worries, the same troubles, the same cares, the same trouble and strife."

The video, which is just over a minute long, is a send-up of the Tory leader's much-vaunted WebCameron project, for which he has been filmed talking in his kitchen while doing the washing-up. It appears on the popular hosting website YouTube and is believed to have been posted by fellow Labour MP Tom Watson, who has also made short films mocking Mr Cameron.

Sources close to the Conservative leader - who married wife Samantha, 35, in 1996 and actually has three children - insisted they were "relaxed" about the video.

Mr Simon claimed his mockery was justified because Mr Cameron had "become almost surreal in the extent to which he'll say anything to anybody if he thinks it's what they want to hear".

Mr Simon said: "Nobody in the Labour Party has said anything to me other than 'Well done, good effort, very funny'." However, he did offer to take the footage down if Mr Cameron said it was offensive.
