A series of power cuts left hundreds of people stranded on rides at Thorpe Park on the hottest day of the year.

A number of popular rides at the Surrey amusement park ground to halt as temperatures soared to a sweltering 35C in parts of the country.

Disgruntled customers took to social media after the "intermittent" issues began on Thursday afternoon.

Alexi Hawkey posted videos of people stuck on both Tidal Wave and Rumba Rapids mid-ride.

Another Twitter user said: "Went to Thorpe Park today, got on three rides and there was a power cut for four hours, also in hot heat it was 34 degrees."

Mark Carter said he had been stuck on Nemesis for 20 minutes.

He tweeted: "Just been sat on Nemesis for 20 minutes as you had a power cut. Felt for the three young staff there trying to their best."

“Of course there's a power cut the day I go to Thorpe Park,” another person added.

Thorpe Park released a statement confirming the issue was an external one.

The amusement park said earlier: “Please be aware that we are currently experiencing a power outage on the island.

“This is an external issue, however we are doing everything we can and working with local services to restore power as quickly as possible.

“We have activated a Bad Weather Guarantee, which allows you to come back to the Island again before October for free.”
