Thieves who stole a lorry carrying £15,000 worth of shortbread had to abandon their loot after they filled the vehicle's diesel tank with cleaning fluid.

The lorry, along with a trailer unit, was taken from Caledonian Logistics on the Midmill Industrial Estate in Kintore, Scotland at about 12.30am on Saturday.

The storage and distribution company said four men were could be seen filling the vehicle's fuel tank on footage captured by the estate's CCTV cameras, the BBC reported.

They managed to drive it just half a mile down the road before it broke down, police said.

The lorry - and the biscuits - were later recovered nearby by officers.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, a spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Officers have urged anyone who believes they may have seen something suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to get in touch with them.

"Police have also asked that business owners take extra care to lock all yard areas and take basic crime prevention steps to secure their property."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
