Gordon Brown has been given some advice from workers on how to deal with becoming Prime Minister after a study suggested that starting a new job was three times more frightening than getting married.
A survey of 2,000 adults by recruitment firm www.jobsite.co.uk showed half believed the best way to make a good impression on the first day was to make friends with colleagues.
One in five said starting a different job was as frightening as visiting the dentist or confronting a spider or rat.
Half of those questioned would recommend setting a priority of making friends with other workers in the team, while one in four said the most important thing was to demonstrate knowledge of the role.
Around one in six suggest arriving early or working late to prove commitment.
Cheryl Morgan, Jobsite's career counsellor, said: "Starting a new job is a nerve-wracking time for anyone and no doubt Gordon Brown will be feeling those first-day jitters more than most.
"It's important for new workers to stay relaxed though as it will enable them to focus on learning the ropes in their new role and will help avoid unnecessary blunders."
