Stars attend remembrance festival

Sir Cliff Richard is to perform at the Festival of Remembrance this weekend
12 April 2012

X Factor star Joe McElderry, Sir Cliff Richard and opera singer Katherine Jenkins will pay tribute to Britain's war dead this weekend at the Festival of Remembrance.

The Queen and other senior royals will join an audience of thousands at the Royal Albert Hall for Saturday's televised event which will honour the country's fallen through music and song.

The festival is staged the day before the Monarch, Prime Minister and other national figures gather at the Cenotaph in Whitehall for the Remembrance Sunday ceremony.

One of the highlights of the festival will be a performance by a choir of military spouses whose partners are serving in Afghanistan.

The women have been led by choirmaster Gareth Malone who formed the group for his popular BBC Two television series The Choir.

With their husbands away on operations, members of the Military Wives Choir from the Royal Marines Base Chivenor in north Devon have found their collective voice and will sing Wherever You Are.

The Royal British Legion stages the festival and this year's performance comes amidst a public dispute between world football's ruling body, Fifa, and England's Football Association over the wearing of the remembrance poppy symbol.

England players have been banned from having the embroidered flower on their tops during a friendly with Spain on Saturday - something David Cameron has labelled "absurd".

Chris Simpkins, director general of the Legion which organises the annual Poppy Appeal, said: "The Legion never insists that the poppy be worn or insists that others allow it to be worn.

"We are grateful when people wear it as a sign of respect, but the decision must be a free one - after all, the poppy represents sacrifices made in the cause of our freedoms."
