A tractor driver has suffered serious injuries after a train carrying 135 people hit his vehicle at a Norfolk level crossing.

The train driver was also taken to hospital and three other people on board suffered minor injuries during the crash in Roudham, near Thetford.

British Transport Police said they were called to the railway line at 12.36pm after reports of the crash.

He said: "Two men, the train driver and the driver of the tractor, have been taken to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for treatment.

“The driver of the tractor has sustained serious, although not life-threatening, injuries. The train driver's injuries are not thought to be serious.”

Passenger Alex Youngs tweeted photos of a smashed window in the train carriage and emergency services at the scene.

He wrote: “Caught up in a train smash on the way to Thetford. Everyone seems ok, driver injured but only panic attacks reported.”

Passengers travelling in the Norwich area were warned to expect delays and advised to check with National Rail before setting off.
