Serviceman critical after shooting

12 April 2012

A member of the armed forces is in hospital fighting for his life after being critically injured in a shooting incident.

Armed police attended a waterfront car park at Ogmore-by-Sea, south Wales, after reports of a gunshot on Saturday.

A member of the armed forces was airlifted to hospital in Swansea with gunshot wounds.

Police cordoned off a large section of the seafront car park and a firearm was recovered following a search.

A number of witnesses later spoke to police.

Inspector Chris Daniel of South Wales Police said: "Our investigation has only just started and is far from complete but we are not looking for anyone else at this time.

"It would be premature to draw any conclusions at this point."

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said on Saturday night: "We can confirm that a member of the armed forces serving at RAF St Athan was involved in an incident this morning and was severely injured.

"The South Wales Police are investigating the matter."
