A ring of steel was thrown up around Parliament today as a mass demonstration got under way against Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.
Metal barriers were installed around Westminster as protesters marched on Parliament Square, led by the Stop Trump coalition and the Green Party’s Caroline Lucas.
Inside the Commons, MPs were debating the Government’s decision to grant the US President a formal state visit in response to petitions against the decision signed by millions of Britons.
Veteran Labour MP Paul Flynn, who led the Westminster Hall debate, said: “The invitation is unique. There has never been an invitation to anyone who has only been a head of state for a few days.
“I think Theresa May has the idea of getting reflected glory from Donald Trump. His extraordinary behaviour means she’s not getting reflected glory, but reflected vitriol.”
He said any attempt to use the close relationship with the US as leverage in upcoming EU negotiations would be misguided.
He added: “He hasn’t the respect in Europe.”
