Pupils in Windsor could be ferried to school in Uber cars in a bid to save the council money.

Discussions between the Royal Borough and the private hire company are underway as the council looks to curb a projected overspend of £440,000, the Windsor Express reports.

The cars would be used for home to school transport for children and young people with special educational, medical or other specific needs.

The home to school transport scheme has seen a ten per cent increase in successful applications on last year, and the service represents the most significant projected increase in the council's budget for children’s services.

Strategic Director Alison Alexander told a meeting of the borough's Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Panel: “We have just entered into discussions with Uber Taxis to see if we could make that work.

“They have said they can reduce the costs for us. We’re going to work on that as a whole council.”

She told the meeting there had been a £230,000 increase in projections, which had resulted in a £440,000 projected overspend against the council budget.

Uber has been approached for comment.
