Powers to search sex offender homes

12 April 2012

Police are to be given new powers to enter and search the homes of convicted sex offenders under proposals being unveiled by Tony Blair.

The powers, to be drawn up later this year, will enable police to assess the risk posed by registered sex offenders to the communities where they live, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said.

Currently officers can only obtain a warrant to enter the home of an individual if they have a reasonable belief that a crime may be committed.

The details of the proposed new powers were being outlined by the Prime Minister in a speech to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in London.

No further details were immediately available.
