A passenger on a ferry bound for Calais has captured the moment a huge fire broke out in the engine room.

The Pride of Canterbury was travelling from Dover when the fire sparked at about 8am this morning.

Passenger Ed Sproston filmed huge clouds of smoke billowing out of the P&O vessel as it was about to reach France.

The ferry company said 337 passengers and 119 crew members were on board the boat when the fire took hold but no one was injured and the passengers got off "as normal".

Mr Sproston told the Dover Express the fumes from the fire were "toxic".

He said: "It was hurting my lungs standing there. It was smoking for a good 20 minutes."

A P&O spokeswoman said the ship was likely to be "out of service for a few days".

She said: "The fire was extinguished straight away by the sprinkler system. There were no injuries, either among the crew or passengers.

"The passengers disembarked as normal.

She added: "Damage to the ship is currently being assessed. It looks like she will be out of service for a few days."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
