Osborne awaits home expenses ruling

Shadow chancellor George Osborne will learn whether he must repay parliamentary expenses
12 April 2012

Shadow chancellor George Osborne will learn today whether he has to repay parliamentary expenses claimed on his second home.

Mr Osborne has been under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards John Lyon over allegations that he overclaimed for the mortgage on his house in his Tatton constituency.

A complaint was lodged by a local Labour Party activist that he claimed for the interest payments on a £450,000 mortgage, although the property was bought for £445,000.

It is reported that the Commons Standards and Privileges Committee - which met on Tuesday to consider the commissioner's report - will order him to pay back some money, while accepting that he acted in good faith.
