Napoli container recovery continues

12 April 2012

A total of 342 containers have now been lifted from the damaged container vessel MSC Napoli grounded a mile off a Heritage Coast site.

The 62,000-tonne vessel's operators, Zodiac Maritime, said 28 more of the containers were taken off the vessel when work resumed on Wednesday after a week-long break because of bad weather.

A Zodiac spokesman said that the weather was too poor for lifting to continue, but there were good prospects for the rest of the week and the weekend.

The Napoli was grounded a mile off Sidmouth, east Devon, on January 20 when it was feared she would go down during a tow to Portland, Dorset, having suffered damage in a Channel storm. Her 26 crew were rescued.

Zodiac said that all but an estimated 100 tonnes was left of the 3,500 tonnes of oil on the vessel, and pumping was continuing.

The Napoli was carrying 2,300 containers, 103 of which were lost overboard.

Of that number, 57 were washed ashore, and 47 were still being sought by the authorities.

The Receiver of Wreck said thousands of items recovered from the beached containers by members of the public had been reported in accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act.

The deadline for reporting items to the Receiver is next Tuesday, and failure to do so is a criminal offence, a spokesman for the Receiver said.

A number of the 17 BMW motorbikes recovered from the beach are among the items reported.
