Minister goes pop for Darfur peace

12 April 2012

A Government minister is set to join a musician billed as Islam's biggest rock star at a news conference highlighting the crisis in Darfur.

Baroness Shriti Vadera, of the Department for International Development, will join British singer Sami Yusuf at the event in Westminster, central London.

The news conference comes ahead of a concert for peace in Darfur with Mr Yusuf and other leading Muslim artists on October 21 at London's Wembley Arena.

The concert will raise awareness about Darfur and raise funds for humanitarian work in the region by the charity Islamic Relief.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter, a practising Muslim who was brought up in London, has recently returned from a fact-finding mission in Darfur.

He has called on the British public to lend their support in bringing peace to the region where hundreds of thousands have lost their lives and more than two million are refugees.

He said: "Music is a universal language, one that transcends religious and cultural boundaries.

"I hope to use this to promote and convey a message of peace worldwide - and in particular for the people of Darfur."

Among those joining the singer on stage at the Wembley Arena concert will be hip-hop band Outlandish and Muslim Country and Western singer Kareem Salama.

The concert comes after Prime Minister Gordon Brown last week called for more action to end the crisis in Darfur.
