12 April 2012

Detectives have been investigating the attempted murder of a baby boy who was found with life-threatening stab wounds.

The critically injured two-month old was discovered by police who were called to a house in Alfred Road, in the Handsworth area of Birmingham, at around 10.45pm on Friday night.

A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and taken into custody where he remains, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said.

The baby, who suffered several stab wounds, immediately underwent emergency surgery in hospital where he is said to be in a stable but critical condition.

Forensic officers and detectives were on Sunday expected to continue investigating the crime scene for evidence while the suspect continues to help police with inquiries.

No further details regarding his identity or the identity of the man arrested have been released by police.

A force spokesman said detectives are not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident.

One woman, who lives on the small street where the stabbing happened, said locals were unsure what had taken place.

"I hope the little boy will be okay. It's such a shame, what has a two-month-old baby done to deserve that?" added the local, who wished to remain anonymous.
