A man has appeared in court charged with the murders of two elderly women.

Andrew Simon Flood is accused of killing Margaret Biddolph, 78, and Anne Leyland, 88, who were found dead in their homes in Southport, Merseyside.

The 43-year-old, from Clifton Road, Southport, appeared at South Sefton Magistrates' Court in Bootle.

He was remanded in custody and his case was sent to Liverpool Crown Court.

Both victims died of asphyxia, post-mortem examinations confirmed.

Mrs Biddolph's body was discovered at her property in Lonsdale Road on Tuesday and Mrs Leyland was found dead at her home in nearby Birch Street in the early hours of Wednesday.

Flood is also charged with robbery in connection with an incident in Janes Brook Road last Saturday, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
