A man has died after being swept out to sea with his family – apparently after being struck by a 10ft wave.

The man got into trouble off Fistral Beach on the north-west coast of Cornwall yesterday evening.

Reports said he was standing on rocks with a woman and two-year-old child when a large wave swept them off their feet.

Lifeguards managed to rescue all three people but the man died in hospital, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

The coastguard rushed to the scene after being alerted by a 999 call yesterday at 5.20pm.

A spokesman said: "RNLI lifeguards rescued a woman using their jetski and a man and two- year-old child were recovered from the sea by an RNLI lifeboat.

"The child and man were taken to hospital by the Coastguard helicopter and the helimed helicopter. The man, sadly, has since died in hospital."

The RNLI tweeted: "Our thoughts are with the family and all of those involved in yesterday’s tragic accident in Newquay."

The conditions were treacherous according to the coastguard at Falmouth, who said the region was hit by 13ft waves and 10ft breaking waves.

Local radio station Pirate FM said the family had been standing on rocks on the beach when they were struck by a 10ft wave which pulled them out to sea.
