Police have mocked a driver who they stopped for texting and driving after he claimed he was only sending a “laughing emoji” to his girlfriend.

The man was caught not wearing a seatbelt and texting by officers in St Helens, Merseyside.

Upon being caught he said: "I was just putting a laughing emoji to my girlfriend."

The police were amused by his response and tweeted: “It was a very unusual reply”.

Officers continued to mock the driver by tweeting a series of emojis relaying the interaction.

The tweet included emojis of a car, a phone, a police car and a crying laughing face.

A symbol of a pound note was also included referencing the fine the man was given.

The spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the driver was stopped at 1.45pm on Tuesday and was given six points on his licence and a £200 fine.
