Some of London's best-known landmarks have been given a colourful look on the £5 coin.

Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square and Elizabeth Tower which houses Big Ben all appear as intricate colour printed engravings on the silver coin as part of the Royal Mints Portrait of Britain coin collection.

Landmarks: the new commemorative £5 coin featuring Buckingham Palace

The four-coin pack, limited to 3,500 sets, has been created so that each landmark looks as though it is being seen through the eyes of a visitor, through passing crowds or rain showers.

Engraver Glyn Davies, who created the designs along with Laura Clancy, said: "We visited the landmarks in London, and it struck us that it's never possible to get an uninterrupted view of them without being obscured in some way by the weather, other tourists or even their location. On returning, we drew up compositions and added a wash of watercolour."

The coins are the first set in a planned annual release aimed at showing a different "Portrait of Britain" which may include historic landmarks, buildings, and natural phenomena from all over Britain.
