London Landmarks light up on New Year's Eve in support of Sadiq Khan's gender-equality campaign

Iconic London landmarks have been lit up to support the Mayor’s new gender equality campaign.

Sadiq Khan launched #BehindEveryGreatCity on Sunday night, a year-long campaign focusing on gender equality in the city.

The campaign coincides with the one hundred year anniversary of the first women in the UK securing the right to vote.

It will highlight the role London played in women's suffrage, mark the progress that’s been made on women’s equality over the past 100 years and tackle gender inequality.

Royal festival Hall supported the campaign

In support of the campaign, a number of London’s iconic venues projected the campaign’s logo onto their walls to coincide with the New Year’s Eve Fireworks.

The venues included: London’s BT Tower, National Theatre, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Odeon Leicester Square, Piccadilly Lights and both Westfield Centres.

In addition, the music played during the display was exclusively by women artists including Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin, Florence Welch, Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa.

The campaign slogan #BehindEveryGreatCity is a deliberate play on the feminist slogan used globally in the 60s and 70s, "behind every great man stands a great woman" and highlights that women don’t stand behind great men, but instead power great cities.

Ahead of the campaign launch, Mr Khan released a video calling on Londoners to make their own New Year’s resolutions for women over the next 12 months.

The video features celebrities such as Naomi Campbell,Laura Whitmore and Tinie Tempah alongside firefighters, police officers, TfL engineers and Sadiq Khan to champion the fact that it is the achievements and contributions of women, from all walks of life, which make cities like London great.

Mr Khan said:“As a proud feminist I am really encouraged to see so many Londoners supporting this campaign to say that Behind Every Great City is equality, opportunity and progress – regardless of your gender.

“It is incredibly important to mark the centenary of this momentous time in history, but also to take stock of the huge inequalities women still face 100 years on from first winning the right to vote".

He continued: “That’s why I’m determined to take action - my #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign will work with Londoners and businesses to remove barriers to women’s success and level the playing field.”

Over the course of the coming year a range of events and celebrations will take place to mark the campaign in the capital.
