A hiker from London had a lucky escape yesterday when he slid 200ft down snow and ice on Snowdon.

Rescuers said he had neither an ice axe nor crampons to stop his fall which happened on the descent from the frozen 3,560ft summit.

Llanberis mountain rescue team and an RAF rescue helicopter from Valley, Anglesey, went to his aid and he was flown to hospital at Bangor.

A rescuer said today: “He was battered and bruised but we don’t think there’s any serious injury. Having fallen 200ft he is very lucky.”

He was with a friend who also slipped and hurt his knee but was able to walk off the mountain with rescuers. Both London men are in their 20s.

Phil Benbow, of the Llanberis team which had 21 volunteers on the peak, warned: “There are winter conditions on the mountain and walkers need ice axes and crampons and the ability to use them.”
