Mr Livingstone has been suspended indefinitely

Ken Livingstone's suspension from Labour over anti-Semitism has been extended indefinitely pending the outcome of a formal internal investigation.

The former London mayor's suspension from the party had been due to expire on April 27.

But the Huffington Post UK revealed that outgoing Labour general secretary Iain McNicol in his last official act signed off on an indefinite extension of Mr Livingstone's suspension.

A Labour spokeswoman said: "Ken Livingstone has been administratively suspended from the Labour Party, pending the outcome of an internal party investigation.

"That suspension starts on the date that his membership suspension applied by the National Constitutional Committee ends on 27 April 2018."

Mr Livingstone was suspended in April 2016 after he claimed in a radio interview that Adolf Hitler had supported Zionism in the 1930s before he "went mad and ended up killing six million Jews".

He was suspended for a further year in April 2017 for breaching three of the Labour party rules.

Mr Livingstone has repeatedly refused to apologise for his remarks.
