Killed DHL worker 'a great father'

12 April 2012

The ex-wife of a British DHL worker gunned down in Kabul has described him as a "great father" who would "not harm anyone".

Julie Wilson, 37, paid tribute to David Giles who died on Saturday with his South African colleague Jason Bresler.

Early accounts suggested the pair were killed by a security guard working at the firm's headquarters in Kabul who then shot himself.

Speaking at her home in Hull where she lives with her new husband Lee and the son she had with Mr Giles - James, 10, - Mrs Wilson said: "He was very outgoing.

"If you met him he was definitely a man's man but at the same time everyone got on with him. He was such a pleasant character - a great guy."

She went on: "He would not hurt anyone, in fact he would befriend everybody and anybody. He was a great father and a good husband."

Mrs Wilson described how she met Mr Giles, 42, when they both lived in Bahrain in the 1990s.

He was still living in the country, the Foreign Office confirmed, where his mother and two sisters are also resident.

The couple married in 1997 and moved to Hull, and she fell pregnant with James soon after the wedding.

Remembering when they met, Mrs Wilson said: "He was a really popular lad, really good fun. We just got together and then got married." She lived with Mr Giles in Hull for six years until they split in 2004.
