Images reveal rucksack 'bomb' panic

12 April 2012

CCTV footage of the moment one of the alleged July 21 terror plotters tried to set off his rucksack bomb has been released.

The pictures show the alleged Oval bomber Ramzi Mohammed trying to set off his home made device on a Northern Line train on July 21 2005.

The footage, which has already been played to the jury in the trial at Woolwich Crown Court, shows firefighter Angus Campbell remonstrating with Mohammed in the chaotic moments after his alleged bomb failed to explode.

His alleged attempt to detonate the device sparked panic in the carriage with passengers screaming in fear and cramming against the doors in a bid to escape.

Only Mr Campbell confronted Mohammed, shouting at him "What have you done? What have you done?"

He and several other eyewitnesses who were in the carriage at the time have given evidence in the trial of six men accused of hatching a suicide plot to detonate rucksack bombs on the London transport system two weeks after the July 7 London bombing.

The grainy footage captures the moments just before and after Mohammed's alleged attempt to set off his device on a northbound Tube train between Stockwell and Oval.

After the alleged device failed to explode Mohammed tried to claim that the explosive mixture leaking from his rucksack was actually bread, it has been alleged.

When the train came to a standstill several passengers tried desperately to stop him escaping but he bolted up an escalator and fled, the court has heard.

Witnesses in the carriage said they were paralysed by fear after Mohammed fired the alleged bomb. Only the detonator blew but the main charge did not, it is alleged.
