Hotel plunge man's family 'shocked'

12 April 2012

The family of a British tourist who died in Mexico after falling from the top floor of a Cancun hotel have expressed their shock at his death.

Adrian Fletcher, 34, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, fell to his death after a "forceful argument" with his girlfriend while they were in the holiday resort as part of a wedding party.

His brother, Michael Fletcher, said the family still had no information about the tragedy but were deeply shocked and upset.

In a statement, he said: "We have no details whatsoever about Adrian's tragic death. The family is deeply shocked and upset by this and requests that the media leaves the family alone to grieve. We cannot give any more information about this as we simply do not have any more details."

Mr Fletcher fell from the top floor of the 14-storey, five-star Riu Cancun Hotel, which is all-inclusive and has 569 rooms in total.

Mexican police said he was seen having a "very forceful argument" with his girlfriend shortly before his death in Thursday.

The 34-year-old had flown with Thomson from Manchester Airport to Cancun, where he had been part of a wedding party of 22 people.

His girlfriend of nine years, who has not been named, was being questioned as a witness in the case.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said staff were in close contact with the family and providing constant assistance.

She said: "Currently the Mexican police are undertaking an investigation into what actually happened. Our consular staff are working very hard on the ground in Mexico. This is a really terrible tragedy and we just hope in the next few days, we can try to establish what did happen."
