Girl arrested over 'gang' stabbing

12 April 2012

A 15-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenage mother in a gang fight.

Victim Samantha Madgin, 18, was stabbed when two groups clashed in a back alley in Wallsend near Newcastle.

She was a new mother who loved her baby, according to a family friend, who also described her as "well-mannered", attractive and a "pleasure to know".

Northumbria Police said the 15-year-old was arrested in the Newcastle area.

Her arrest came after a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s were also held for questioning on suspicion of murder.

Detectives anticipate making more arrests and urged others caught up in the violence to come forward.

Chief Supt Steve Storey said Ms Madgin was in one of the two groups involved in "an altercation".

He told a news conference at North Shields Police Station: "We particularly want to hear who was in Victoria Avenue, Albert Avenue, Harle Street and the surrounding area around this time.

"There was clearly some sort of disturbance going on which has led to a young woman losing her life. We know there was an altercation between two groups. Samantha was in one of these groups.

"We also need to speak to another man and a woman who were possibly involved in the disturbance."
