Football hero Paul Gascoigne is expected to remain in hospital for several more days following a serious car crash, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Passers-by feared the former World Cup star was dead when they went to give first aid at the scene of the crash on Sunday evening on Newcastle's Quayside.

He was bleeding profusely, witnesses said, and was put in the recovery position until paramedics arrived.

The 43-year-old is being treated at Newcastle General Hospital where his condition was described as "comfortable".

A spokeswoman said: "He is unlikely to be released before the end of the week."

Gascoigne was a passenger in a blue Vauxhall Astra which crashed into the city's Guildhall beneath the Tyne Bridge.

A 36-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
