Flood alerts follow heavy downpours

12 April 2012

Nineteen flood warnings are in place across the country after heavy rainfall overnight.

The Environment Agency said they were keeping a "close eye" on the Midlands and Wales after nearly two inches of rain fell in some parts.

There are currently no serious flood warnings in force, but the agency has issued 75 flood watches - the lowest category of warning - across the UK.

Capel Curig in Conwy, North Wales, received the most rain, just under two inches between 7pm on Saturday and 7am on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency said: "At the moment, although we haven't had any flooding or anything serious, we are keeping a close eye on the Midlands and Wales.

"We haven't got any serious flood warnings in place but if we have more rain, things could develop quite quickly.

"There's still a possibility there will be some more rain."

The rain is expected to clear later on Sunday but the forecast for the week ahead is that there will be more unsettled weather.

Wednesday should have clear spells but strong winds and heavy rain are expected throughout the rest of the week.

Meanwhile, there was a frost in Scotland overnight after temperatures dropped below freezing. Tulloch Bridge near Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands recorded a minimum temperature of -1 degree Celsius.
