Pupils in Edinburgh stage stay at home School Uniform Day amid Covid-19 crisis

Pupils of all ages across the UK have had to get used to studying from home amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Classrooms have been forced to close by the crisis, except for children deemed vulnerable or parented by key workers, with teachers forced into delivering curriculums remotely.

Many students will have undoubtedly gladly stashed their uniforms away during the lockdown.

But not all of them, it seems, with a collection of young students in Edinburgh gladly donning theirs instead for a special School Uniform Day on Friday.

In a video produced by the BBC, several children spoke glowingly about taking part in the initiative.

One pupil said "it really helps me to concentrate when I'm doing my home schooling and I think it brings us all together as a community."

Another added that wearing her school uniform helped her feel "closer" to her friends while they were separated amid the Covid-19 crisis.

One of the children meanwhile pointed out three reasons for taking part.

"It's comfortable, obviously, it reminds me that everything is going to turn out ok and positive in this situation ... and that someone will always be there for me when I'm down or feeling upset."

The School Uniform Day came after the Government said earlier this week that schools should prepare to gradually open for more pupils from the beginning of next month as part of plans to transition the UK out of lockdown.

The Government envisages Reception, Y1 and Y6 children returning to school in England by June, with smaller class sizes planned for those deemed to be at key stages of their development.

Officials' ambition is for all primary school children to return to school before the summer holidays for a month “if feasible” – but this will be kept under review.

Secondary schools and further education colleges have also been advised to prepare to begin some “face-to-face contact” with Year 10 and 12 students who have key exams next year.

Schools in Wales will meanwhile not reopen on June 1, while those in Scotland and Northern Ireland may not see pupils return before the summer holidays.
