A driver was stopped by police for carrying more than 1,000 kilos of cheese in his van.

Officers discovered the man had driven 1,280 kg of dairy treats through Sawtry, Cambridgeshire, on Monday.

The sheer volume of cheese meant the van was 41 per cent over its legal weight limit when it was stopped at a weigh bridge off the A1, police said.

Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Police Unit said in a tweet about the bizarre incident that the “vehicle (was) prohibited (from moving) until 1280kg of cheese was removed or eaten?”

According to the BBC, the driver was allowed to take some of the dairy produce away but made to call in another van to take the excess.
