Cambridge students cool down by stripping off for a dip on hottest day of year after May Balls

After dressing up to the nines on the hottest day of the year, these students cooled down in dramatic fashion today — by stripping off and jumping in the river.

They had been celebrating yesterday at one of Cambridge University’s May Balls, held to mark the end of the academic year. They dived into the Cam after partying all night, leaving dresses and dinner jackets in a pile on the pavement.

They will not be the only ones looking to cool down today, as the heatwave continues. The mercury was expected to hit 31C with the weather staying “dry, warm and muggy” overnight in London and the South, according to Meteogroup UK.

Tomorrow temperatures could reach 33C — 10 degrees higher than the June average and hotter than Barcelona, where it is predicted to be 32C. Yesterday temperatures peaked at 32.4C in Northolt.

The heatwave, caused by an air mass from the Azores, is likely to ease off towards the end of the week. Cloud and lower temperatures of about 22C are forecast for Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday, Public Health England issued a health warning and urged families to keep an eye on their neighbours. The London Ambulance Service said it was preparing to be “very busy”, adding: “Please only call if it’s an emergency.”

Waitrose reported its sales of rosé were up 108 per cent this week, with cider up 36 per cent and barbecue food up 114 per cent. Sales of fans at John Lewis are up 2,000 per cent, while Superdrug reported sales of sun cream were up by 60 per cent.
