Briton vanishes on Valentine's trip

12 April 2012

A 23-year-old British man has gone missing during a Valentine's trip to Venice with his girlfriend.

The man has been named by Italian police as Richard John Raynor, from Doncaster.

Mr Raynor went missing early on Thursday morning as the couple were making their way back to their hotel in the Mestre area of the city after a night out.

He vanished as his girlfriend was looking for a taxi.

She tried calling his mobile but it was switched off and later contacted police after Mr Raynor failed to return to their hotel.

An elderly couple later returned Mr Raynor's mobile, wallet and room key to the hotel.

Mr Raynor and his girlfriend had flown to the Italian city on Wednesday on a three-day Valentine's break.

Mr Raynor's father, William, has arrived in Venice and has been putting up fliers with a photo of his son, looking for information, the agency reported.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said they were aware that a Briton had gone missing in Venice.

A spokeswoman said: "We are aware that a British national was reported missing on February 14 in Venice. The local authorities are investigating."
