Boris Johnson hit with wave of mockery over Downing Street party apology

Josh Salisbury13 January 2022

Boris Johnson has been hit with a wave of mockery after telling the House of Commons he believed a boozy party at Downing Street was a “work meeting”.

His statement that he believed the occasion was work related sparked a flurry of Brits mocking his comments.

Social media was awash with hilarious memes poking fun at Mr Johnson’s apology.

Among the sea of comments, one person wrote on Twitter: “I was trying to come up with a comparison to Boris’s ‘I thought it was a work event’ and all I can think of are those people who go into hospital with a bottle stuck up their bum and claim they slipped and fell onto it”.

Another Twitter user added sarcastically: “I thought it was a work event, so I brought my wife - who doesn’t work there.”

Many took the opportunity to make memes about the Prime Minister’s defence.

Among the comments, one posted a screenshot from popular game show Would I Lie to You with the caption: “I once spent 25 minutes at a party but mistook it for a work event.”

Another recreated the well-known scene from Little Britain where David Walliams plays a politician making an increasingly far-fetched apology.

“I walked outside for some fresh air, I thought it was a work event not a party as drinking at work is what I do,” the caption read.

However, others spoke in defence of the Prime Minister.

Among the comments, one said the anger over the party was “point scoring”.

Another suggested some of those calling for the Prime Minister to consider his position would have also been in large gatherings in May 2020.

“If the whole country is in uproar and enraged about Boris’s garden event there sure are a garden shed load of utter hypocrites living in the UK,” said the social media user.
