Big freeze turns into the big thaw

12 April 2012

Blizzard hit Britain awoke to the big thaw on Saturday as temperatures turned milder and rain washed away the snow.

Fears that overnight temperatures could plummet and turn slush to potentially deadly black ice failed to materialise.

Rain is the order of the day across much of the UK with only higher ground in north east Scotland forecast to get more snow.

Thick snow brought parts of the UK to a standstill on Friday with thousands of schoolchildren sent home as roads became gridlocked and temperatures went below zero.

Wales and the west country were among the worst hit but the west Midlands, Yorkshire and Derbyshire all struggled to cope. Snow brought rush hour misery in the west and east Midlands but roads were gridlocked from Aberystwyth to Somerset and Gloucestershire.

In Wales Cardiff International Airport was forced to close for two hours to clear its runway, causing delays to flights. Further west, near Carmarthen, more than 500 drivers were trapped for up to five hours on a gridlocked A48.

Police across south Wales appealed to the public to stay at home as driving conditions grew increasingly treacherous.

Snow across most of the region has been washed away by the rain and driving conditions are back to normal for the time of year. England, Wales and Northern Ireland can all expect a weekend of intermittent rain.

MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, is forecasting rain across much of the UK this weekend and into next week.

"There was some snow overnight on higher ground in Wales and northern England but that turned to rain in lower lying areas," a spokeswoman said. "It has turned milder now and the weather will be unsettled with a lot of rain into next week."
