'Bedroom tax' not lawful, court is told

The Government’s new “bedroom tax” discriminates against the disabled and their families on benefits, the High Court heard today.

Lawyers handling 10 cases are challenging the legality of the law, which came in last month and has led to cuts in housing benefit to tenants in the social housing sector.

Some claimants in the judicial review live in Hackney and Southwark. Their QC Martin Westgate said: “Because of disability, each needs accommodation larger than allowed. They contend that the regulations are unlawful.” The case continues.
