Alexandra takes the X Factor title

12 April 2012

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke described her triumph as "the best feeling ever" and announced plans to duet with mentor Cheryl Cole's band Girls Aloud.

Burke was the bookies' favourite but said she was "shocked" to beat boy band JLS in the final. Eoghan Quigg, 16, came third during a night that saw just over eight million votes cast by viewers.

"I said from the beginning I thought JLS would win," Burke said.

"I am in disbelief. I keep saying to my friends and family, 'This isn't real'.

"I cannot believe it's happened, but I am so happy. This is the best feeling ever."

After her victory, which lands her a £1 million record contract, the 20-year-old north Londoner praised Cole for having taught her "to be comfortable in my own skin".

"I want to do a duet with Girls Aloud," she said. "That will happen I guarantee it."

Burke will appear on a special Top of the Pops to be shown on Christmas Day and revealed Girls Aloud would also be on the show.

Burke said she cried when Top of the Pops was scrapped.

"When they said the winner gets to perform on a one-off Top of the Pops, that's what kicked me up the bum and made me think, 'You'd better win girl'."
