More than 130 foreign national serious offenders have avoided being deported from Britain in the past year, a Home Office minister has revealed.

Another 857 people convicted of serious offences were thrown out of the country.

Immigration minister Damian Green said the criminals had all been subject to what are known as multi-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA).

MAPPA are used to co-ordinate work to manage serious offenders, including registered sex offenders, violent and other types of sexual offenders and those who pose a serious risk to the public.

Foreigners convicted of serious offences serve their sentence in prison and while awaiting deportation are released into the community under MAPPA restrictions.

But Mr Green said there had been 138 successful appeals against deportation between October 2010 and September 2011.

The figures were released in a written response to Witham MP Priti Patel who had asked the Home Office how many foreign offenders under the MAPPA scheme had avoided deportation on human rights grounds.

Mr Green said obtaining this information would have been disproportionately expensive.
