Uber is taking to the skies as it launches a helicopter service offering passengers a speedy trip across New York.

Users of the ride-hailing app can now reserve a seat on a helicopter which will take them between lower Manhattan and JFK airport.

Prices for the Uber Copter are reported to be between $200 and $225 for the eight-minute flight.

Images showed the debut flight taking off from Manhattan’s financial district on Tuesday.

Passengers can request the ride up to five days in advance or immediately.

They can also book another trip back to the city upon arriving at the airport.

The service will operate at peak afternoon times on weekdays and is available only to Platinum and Diamond Uber members.

Uber Copters seat up to five people and passengers can bring on board a carry-on bag and a separate personal bag.

It comes after the ride-hailing firm unveiled its new flying taxis ahead of the planned commercial launch in 2023.

Uber this week also launched “comfort” rides in dozens of cities in the US.

The new style of journey offers passengers the option to tell drivers they do not want to chat, and the option of a car with more legroom.
