Transport Secretary Chris Grayling was pictured at Clapham Junction station among thousands of commuters battling to get to work during Monday's crippling Tube strike.

The minister was photographed looking unimpressed in a black beanie hat amongst hordes of people in chaotic scenes at the packed south-west London station.

Fellow passenger, Callum Munro, tweeted: “Stuck in the #tubestrike chaos at Clapham Junction with Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling! Might have to complain about @SouthernRailUK...”

The MP for Epsom and Ewell has come under fire in recent months, particularly over his handling of Southern Rail, with a long-running dispute over driverless trains resulting in a three day walkout this week.

Last month a leaked letter revealed he opposed handing over control of suburban rail companies to keep them “out of the clutches” of Labour, leading fellow Conservative MP Bob Neill to call for his resignation.

A number of people took to Twitter to criticise Mr Grayling during the Tube strike as well.

Francis Stones tweeted: "Embarrassed at our transport system and how public are expected to pay for such a poor service. Chris grayling has failed."

Clapham Junction was particularly badly affected by Monday’s 24-hour walkout, and had to be evacuated in the morning due to “severe overcrowding”.

Many posted pictures of the congested station corridors on social media, with Joey Langran describing the scenes as “absolutely ridiculous” and Alastair Smyth saying it was “utter chaos”.

The strike was over staffing levels, with unions saying over 800 jobs have been axed due to ticket offices closures.
