Generous black cab drivers will ferry war heroes to and from veterans’ clubs and Remembrance services free of charge on Sunday.

“Poppy cab” taxi drivers will give up their fares to take the war veterans to Westminster Bridge and clubs around London.

The capital’s cabbies have a history of waiving fares to transport veterans. The Taxi Charity runs annual trips to Worthing for retired war heroes, and earlier this year took a group to the Netherlands to commemorate the Liberation of Arnhem.

Meanwhile, 4,500 London Transport workers killed in the two World Wars will be remembered by a 50-strong delegation from the London Transport Old Comrades Association at London’s biggest Remembrance Day parade.

They will join the march to the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Sunday before laying a wreath.

The group will be led by retired bus driver John Norris, who served in the Royal Engineers in the mid-1960s.

Mr Norris said: “It is an absolute honour for me to be given the privilege to lead the TfL contingent again at this year’s Remembrance Parade.

“As we march towards the Cenotaph, we will remember all our fallen colleagues who gave their lives in both World Wars and other conflicts.”

This year Underground worker Eric Reeve – a TA veteran – will lay the wreath.

“I feel honoured and proud to be laying the wreath on behalf of TfL and the London Transport Old Comrades Association,” he said. “Remembrance Sunday is a particularly special time to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us to be free to do what we want.”

War veterans already get free travel on buses, Tubes and trains through special Oyster cards.
