King's Cross St Pancras evacuated: Busy Tube station closed amid rush hour overcrowding

One of London’s busiest Tube stations was evacuated after becoming overwhelmed with rush hour commuters.

King's Cross St Pancras was closed just before 9am on Tuesday amid heavy overcrowding.

Alarms sounded and passengers were ordered to leave the “rammed” platforms and ticket halls.

Trains were not stopping at the station, which is a major interchange for commuters hoping to switch Tube lines.

Commuter Joe Bell tweeted: "Just got off the tube at #KingsCross to alarms telling me to 'leave the station immediately'. Interesting morning."

Another, Karen Childs, said: "Mass evacuation at Kings Cross St Pancras sirens going off etc. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm legging it."

Transport for London said the problems were sparked by a broken down Northern line train.

Delays on national rail services also meant two "very full" intercity services arrived at the station at the same time, offloading large numbers of passengers into the Tube station.

"It was a combination of those things all at once", a TfL spokesman said.

The station reopened about 20 minutes after closing.

The spokesman added: "We would like to apologise to any customers affected."
