Rail industry bosses today called for “urgent clarification” over the future of Crossrail 2 after the Tories left out a commitment to it in their manifesto.
The Railway Industry Association warned London could be “left behind” without the project. Mayor Sadiq Khan warned the capital “desperately needs” the proposed north-south link or commuters will be condemned to years of travel misery.
Business groups, town halls and MPs have all urged Theresa May to commit to the infrastructure project amid fears the Government has cooled towards it.
They are concerned that both the Tories and Labour will concentrate on improving rail links in Northern cities before committing to funding for the capital.
The Conservative manifesto promised investment in High Speed 2 and to expand Heathrow but did not mention Crossrail 2, simply saying it would create “extra capacity in the railways”.
However, Darren Caplan, chief executive of the Rail Industry Association –— which include major firms such as Thales and Babcock — said: “Transport infrastructure needs to be improved throughout the whole of the UK and it’s important London is not left behind.
“Crossrail 2 will be essential for the capital and UK economy and transport connectivity, and should be given the green light. We need urgent clarification and a clear commitment from the next government”.
Mr Khan added: “There is no commitment to the infrastructure London desperately needs.”
A Conservative spokesman said: “We will consider all projects in due course in the normal way— that includes Crossrail 2.”
