Commuters were this morning left stranded on train platforms as rush hour services were cancelled.

Southeastern services into London were hit by problems due to signal failures.

Two lines were closed at Petts Wood station since 5am due to the problem, causing trains to be severely delayed and diverted.

Some services heading to-and-from London Cannon Street have been cancelled, leaving commuters stranded and unable to get to work.

Frustrated rail users have vented on social media, with one tweeting: “Two more [delayed trains] today make it 562 consecutive delays/cancels without ONE single train on time in between. Absolutely scandalous cretins.”

Another person wrote: "I wish these things didn't happen so frequently. It's not easy having to justify being late almost every day."

Others have had no information as to why they are stuck on platforms, leaving them guessing what is causing the delay.

A Southeastern spokesman said: "There have been signalling issues on this line of route since around 05:03 this morning.

"This has prevented us from using the up and down fast lines and has led to congestion on the slow lines.

"There are currently delays of approx 20 minutes to some services. We urge passengers to check before they travel and allow a little more time to make their journey."

National Rail said that staff are at Petts Wood station working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
