Vintage Routemaster buses drafted in to help carry passengers across London today offered some light relief to commuters caught up in the Tube strike.

The old Routemasters were dusted off as Transport for London put on extra buses to cope with demand during the 24-hour suspension of Piccadilly line services.

A ride on one of the red or green buses put a smile on the faces of those facing an otherwise stressful journey.

Historic RT-type double-decker buses were also wheeled out for the occasion.

Instagram user Sean Kennedy posted a picture of the rear of a red antique bus in Green Lanes, north London, with the caption: “They're using old-school Routemasters on the 29 route today. Never seen that for a Tube strike.”

Rachella Sinclair, who shared a picture of a dark green Routemaster in Finsbury Park, said: “They're pulling out the old Routemasters for the #TubeStrike.”

On Twitter, Kerin Cosford wrote: “Always nice seeing the museum Routemasters back out on the roads. We should have tube strikes more often.”

Tom Dubber, tweeted: Loving all the old #Routemasters out this morning #PicadillyLineStrike.”

Clare Hall-Craggs said: “Splendid red and green Routemasters ruling the 29 route today."

The busy Tube line was suspended until 9pm tonight after hundreds of drivers walked out over claims of a breakdown in industrial relations.
